Some tips about learning Mandarin

  • Being able to communicate with Chinese speakers is not as difficult as many people think. A few words plus facial expressions and gesture can convey a lot. Understanding what the locals say, even if only a little, and making yourself understood is a rewarding experience which will make your visit or stay much more interesting and enjoyable.
  • Don’t worry about getting things wrong. Please remember that you don’t have to pronounce everything perfectly. The Chinese will appreciate your efforts and will try to help you. Through language, you will meet new people, make new friends, and understand the Chinese culture better.
  • It’s a good idea to prepare in advance what you want to say before the event. For example, before going shopping, check the section on shopping and the dictionary at the back so that you feel confident.
  • The pronunciation guide provides tips on pronouncing the sounds and tones. As the tones and several sounds are completely different from those of European languages, you are strongly advised to start by studying the pronunciation guide and to return to this section as often as possible.
  • It’s also useful to have a good look at the basic grammar section, which provides you with the basic structures and unique features of the Chinese language so that you will have at least a rough idea of how the language works.

  • General phrases provide you with some tips and a list of basic phrases preceding the main sections.
